The Keto and Co Review:

Overall, Nature’s Hollow sugar-free syrup wasn’t our top pick. The syrup was very thin, a common theme we’ve noticed amongst maple syrup substitutes, and we didn't think it was sweet enough. When it came to the maple flavor, it was lacking and it had a fruity aftertaste.

However, this sugar-free maple syrup option is one of the lowest in net carbs which is great when you want to enjoy a generous pour! But, we'd love to see the exact net carb math to confirm that this option is in fact, zero net carbs.

Overall, we'd still recommend this syrup over the sugar-free options that have a long list of unreadable ingredients and hidden sugars and starches!

What Others are Saying:

Amazon rating: 4 stars based on 140 customer reviews

The Positives: Despite our review, many of Nature's Hollow customers on Amazon think that their maple syrup “tastes like the real thing.” Customers liked how fresh it tasted and the short ingredients list without any artificial sweeteners.

The Negatives: The consensus throughout the one to five-star reviews was that the syrup needs to be thicker. Their customers also complained that the combination of runny syrup and the wide cap doesn’t allow for a graceful pour.

The Keto and Co Review

When we first opened the bottle of Wäbry No Sugar Added Syrup, the scent of strawberry was overwhelming. It was apparent that even before tasting it, this syrup would be too overpowering for a full pancake or waffle breakfast.

When we drizzled it on our pancakes and took our first bite, the aftertaste was tangy and as we predicted, too strong. The taste reminded us of a runny jam which isn’t always a bad thing but in this case, didn’t work. If you’re looking for pancake and waffle syrup, we don’t suggest this product. However, we do think it would be delicious on a scoop of keto ice cream or plain greek yogurt!

What Others Are Saying:

Amazon Rating: 4.2 stars based on 320 customer reviews

The Positives: Wäbry's customers liked the versatility of the product and that it can be incorporated into many different meals or drinks. One customer writes, “It actually tastes like real strawberries, not that overly sweetened strawberry flavoring I hate...Problem is, I found too many ways to use it and obsessed over it and went through a whole bottle in like a week...”

The Negatives: Some customers experienced an off aftertaste while others enjoyed the strong taste of strawberry, mentioning it had an organic feel. A number of people also complained that the syrup was too watery for their liking.

  1. ChocZero Sugar-Free Maple Syrup

ChocZero makes a wide array of low-carb products like candy bars, chocolate chips, and bark. When it comes to syrups they boast the most flavors maple, maple pecan, maple vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, caramel, and more. If you’re looking for something in addition to the classic maple syrup, this is definitely the brand for you.

Other Attributes: Keto-friendly, Sugar-Free, No Sugar Alcohol, Gluten-Free

The Ingredients: Liquid Vegetable Fiber, Natural Maple Flavor, Monk Fruit Extract, Caramel Color

The Price: $9.75/bottle on Amazon

The Keto and Co Review:

Winner, winner, pancakes for dinner! We were already excited to try this one because we’ve had ChocZero's seasonal syrup flavors before. When we poured it onto our pancakes, we were relieved to see a thick syrup drizzle out. The sweetness level was perfect and had the closest taste to a true maple syrup without any off aftertastes. The only downside you’ll experience is when you’re almost at the end of the bottle, the thickness of the syrup can make it hard to get the last bit out. We suggest cutting the bottle or taking a knife to fish the remaining goodness outno syrup left behind!

What Others Are Saying:

Amazon Rating: 4.5 stars based on 4,133 customer reviews

The Positives: On Amazon, ChocZero Sugar-Free Maple Syrup customers are saying that the taste is “thick, buttery and very similar to the real thing.” One person said, “I actually don't miss my real maple syrup and now I don't get all those high-glycemic sugar calories when I have my high protein pancakes!”

The Negatives: ChocZero's one-star reviews are complaints about the product spiking blood sugar. While we’ve not experienced this, it’s important to make sure that you’re tracking the number of net carbs that you're consuming and to investigate other foods or drinks that might have had an effect. Other customers also thought this product was too thick and didn't have enough maple flavor.

  1. Lakanto Sugar-Free Maple Syrup

Lakanto's mission is to "bring chi to all life by creating innovative, delicious, sugar-free products." All of Lakanto's products contain monk fruit, an ancient ingredient that has been used for centuries and is 300x sweeter than white sugar.

The Ingredients: Purified Water, Tapioca Fiber, Chicory Root Inulin, Potato Starch, Natural Flavors, Sea Salt, Monk Fruit Extract, Fruit Juice (Color), Natural Citrus Extract (Preservatives)

The Price: $8.99/bottle on Amazon

The Keto and Co Review:

Before we even opened the bottle, it was clear how runny the syrup was going to be. The combination of the packaging, the syrup color, and the lack of viscosity made the syrup resemble brown liquor. The smell of the syrup was fresh and delicious but our first bite tasted like artificial butter or butterscotch candy. This was delightful at first but got a little sickening after a few bites.

While Lakanto’s Sugar-Free Maple Syrup was not our favorite choice, we’d suggest purchasing it over many of the sugar-free options that have a long list of ingredients and hidden sugar and starches.

What Others Are Saying:

Amazon Rating: 3.8 stars based on 4,850 customer reviews

The Positives: Many customers mentioned that the taste is almost exactly like the real thing and that they thoroughly enjoy the texture and sweetness of the syrup.

The Negatives: Although there were many positive reviews, the majority of the one-star reviews were complaining about a chemical aftertaste and the watery texture.

The Price: Single $3.17/bottle on Amazon but in stores, the price varies by the grocery store

The Keto and Co Review:

Mrs. Butterworth's Sugar-Free Syrup has the best level of thickness out of all of the reviewed syrups. The sweetness is not overwhelming, but there isn’t much of a maple taste to it. On the back of their nutrition label, they say there is a “trivial amount of sugars” and list corn syrup in their ingredients list. As a company that services keto dieters and diabetics, we take our ingredients list and transparency very seriously. That’s why we never hide behind rounding or hidden sugars and always give you a breakdown of the net carb math on the back of every package.

While Mrs. Butterworth claims to have 0 net carbs, we are skeptical because of ingredients like corn syrup and sugar. If you’re going to go with this option, we’d suggest sticking to the serving size suggestion and testing your blood sugar and ketone levels after consuming it.

What Others Are Saying:

Amazon Rating: 4.6 stars based on 749 customer reviews

The Positives: Seventy-seven percent of product reviewers gave this syrup a 5-star rating and say that it tastes great even with no sugar. Customers loved how consistent, affordable, and flavorful the syrup was.

The Negatives: Many customers wished they had read the ingredients list before eating it. Additionally, some customers also mentioned that they felt it wasn’t sweet enough and that it had a strange aftertaste.

The End!
